ACM Workshop on mmWave Sensing Systems and Applications

We are pleased to announce the Call for Papers for The First ACM Workshop on mmWave Sensing Systems and Applications (co-located with Sensys 9223, Istanbul, Turkey), which will be held on November 12th, 2023.

mmWave spectrum spans the frequency range between 30 GHz and 300 GHz. Prope led by the availability of miniature commercial-off-the-shelf mmWave chipsets and devices, there has been a significant advancement in mmWave sensing solutions and systems in outdoor and indoor applications. However, there remain significant gaps from lab to real deployments due to the lack of benchmark open datasets, the lack of understanding of signal propagation characteristics, and the constraints in hardware capabilities, etc. The workshop aims to bring together researchers in academia and industry to present the latest research findings. It also serves as a venue to brainstorm new opportunities and grand challenges. The scope of the workshop includes, but not limited to:  *   mmWave sensing hardware, waveform and platforms  *   mmWave sensing datasets  *   mmWave sensing algorithms  *   mmWave propagation modeling for indoor and outdoor sensing scenarios  *   Novel mmWave sensing applicationsSubmissions should be previously unpublished, and not currently under review by another conference or journal – Submission site

Key Dates:  *   Paper Submission Due: September 8, 2023, 23:59 AoE  *   Notification of Paper Acceptance: October 6, 2023  *   Camera-Ready Paper Deadline: October 20, 2023  *   Workshop Day: November 12, 2023

We look forward to receiving your valuable contributions and welcoming you to the ACM mmWave Sensing Systems and Applications workshop in Istanbul.

UK URSI Commission C invited talk

Ultra-dense networks, “cell-free” Massive MIMO, and Open RAN

Date: June 28, 2023

Time: UK time 14:00 – 15:00
Host: Dr. Emad AlsusaSpeaker: Prof. Alister Burr

Click here for MS TEAMS meeting link

Abstract:As 5G networks are rolled out and we consider what 6G might bring, the infrastructure of the radio access network is also developing, especially to support increasing network densities. In this talk we first consider the implications of network densification for conventional cellular systems, touching on the relevance of radio propagation in this respect. We then consider Massive MIMO, and the extent to which it provides a solution to the issues raised by densification, after which we introduce the “cell-free” Massive MIMO concept. Finally we consider the parallel evolution of the radio access network, including C-RAN and most recently O-RAN, and the relevance of “cell-free” massive MIMO in this context.Biography:Alister Burr has been Professor of Communications at the University of York since 2001, teaching and researching primarily in wireless communications, with research interests primarily in the physical layer, including turbocodes and iterative processing, MIMO and multicarrier techniques. More recently this has developed towards the application of the physical layer across the network, including physical-layer network coding, multi-hop infrastructureless wireless networks, and the radio access network, having received funding from EPSRC, the European Commission and Dstl in these areas. He is currently co-chair of COST INTERACT working group 2, and has served as Associate Editor of IEEE Communications Letters, Workshops co-chair of ICC 2015, and TPC track chair for PIMRC 2018 and 2020.

Massive open online course on “Ultra-Dense Networks for 5G and its Evolution”

Many of the new mobile communication devices will be things that power and monitor our homes, city infrastructure and transport. Controlling drones thousands of miles away, performing remote surgeries or being immerse in video with no latency will also be a huge game changer. Those are some of the few things that make the fifth generation (5G) a revolution expected to be a thrust to the economy and that make it the focus of all the players in the telecommunications field nowadays. To that end, the design and density of deployment of new networks is also changing becoming denser, what introduces new challenges into play. What else will it add to previous generations? The MOOC about Ultra-dense networks for 5G and its evolution has been prepared by the researchers of a European MSCA ITN, named TemUp5G, and introduces the most important technologies that support 5G mobile communications, with an emphasis on increasing capacity and reducing power, that facilitates the deployment of small cells. The content spans from aspects of communication technologies to use cases, prototyping and the future ahead, not forgetting issues like interference management, energy efficiency or spectrum management. The aim of the MOOC is to fill the gap in graduation and post-graduation learning on content related to emerging 5G technologies and its applications, including the future 6G. The target audience involves engineers, researchers, practitioners, and students.

The TeamUp5G MOOC “Ultra-dense networks for 5G and its evolution” is now online with the participation of all the TeamUp5G early stage researchers and several supervisors.

The MOOC is integrated by 6 modules focused on the following subjects:

Module 1 – Ultra-dense networks and small cells

Module 2 – New transmission technologies

Module 3 – Interference management and energy efficiency

Module 4 – Spectrum sharing and carrier aggregation

Module 5 – Use cases and prototyping

Module 6 – The future ahead

To attend the MOOC for free, please, enrol here.
