7th Training School / ESoA course

COST CA20120 – INTERACT 7th Training School: Short-Range Radio Propagation: Theory, Models and Application

25-29 August 2025

Dublin, Ireland

Scope

The course will deal with propagation and channel modelling for medium/short range wireless systems and networks, including millimetre wave and Terahertz radio propagation, as well as aspects related to MIMO and UWB technologies. Emerging topics such as RIS and machine learning approaches will be covered.  The course will include a workshop on the use of HFSS for modelling a propagation link (including basic antenna design/coupling).

This 45 hours course (equivalent to 2.5 ECTS) combines lectures, exercises and practical computer-based sessions along with a social event.

Targeted Audience

The course is primarily targeted at PhD students but is open to researchers with an interest in these topics, from industry or academia.

The prerequisites are: basics of wireless communications, along with some knowledge of electromagnetic and appropriate engineering mathematics.

Dates

August 25-29, 2025

Speakers

  • Prof. Conor Brennan, Dublin City University
  • Prof. Thomas Kürner, Technische Universität Braunschweig,
  • Prof. Enrico Vitucci, University of Bologna
  • Prof. Fredrik Tufvesson Lund University (SE)
  • Dimitris Tzagkas, Ansys

General Programme

The full programme involves a series of lectures on topics such as overview of wireless communication fundamentals, fundamentals of EM wave propagation, full wave techniques, geometric optics and introduction to ray-based methods, techniques for RT and RL, mm-wave and THz propagation, multipath propagation, MIMO channels, Joint Sensing and Communication, UWB, and Machine Learning considerations. There will be exercises and interactive demonstrations each day, and a final exam for those taking the course for credit. The HFSS workshop is also included in the programme of the school.

General Schedule

Lectures will take place from 8.30 to 6 pm from Monday 25th to Thursday 18th and from 8.30 to lunchtime on Friday 29th. The final exam takes place on the afternoon of the Friday.
